SHOOTING COMPLEX PLANS PUMPKIN SHOOT

The Clark County Shooting Complex’s fourth annual Pumpkin Shoot is planned from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 26 at the complex, 11351 N. Decatur Blvd. The event is a 30-arrow 5-spot competition. INDOOR BOOT CAMP PLANNED MONTHLY AT LIBRARY

Certified personal trainer Judy Paris plans a weekly indoor boot camp at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. The class is set to include cardio, stretching, strengthening (exercises such as pushups, squats, lunges, etc.), and core work and balancing.

It is recommended that participants bring a yoga mat and towel and drink plenty of water before class.

The class will be in the library’s multipurpose room Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, 9, 16 and 23 and in the board room Oct. 12 and 19.

YOGA SESSIONS PLANNED IN THE PARK

Mark Balfe-Taylor of Hot Yoga Revitalized has set a schedule for yoga in the park. All classes are traditional Yin yoga, last about 75 minutes and are free and open to the public.

CITY OF LAS VEGAS TO OFFER ARTHRITIS EXERCISE PROGRAM

The city of Las Vegas is set to offer residents suffering from arthritis a way to stay fit. Thanks to a $4,000 grant from the National Recreation and Park Associationand the Arthritis Foundation, with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the city’s East Las Vegas Community Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave., is set to offer the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program.

The program is scheduled from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for six weeks by instructors certified and trained by the Arthritis Foundation.

The classes are suited for anyone that is interested in preventing or managing arthritis but also for those looking for a regular, low-impact exercise program. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is expected to be offered at other centers in the coming months. For more information, contact Bernard Preston at 702-229-4904.

CHEFS FOR KIDS GOLF TOURNAMENT PLANNED AT PAINTED DESERT

The third annual Chefs for Kids charity golf tournament is planned at 7 a.m. Oct. 13 at Painted Desert Golf Course, 5555 Painted Mirage Drive. Registration deadline was Oct. 6.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Chefs for Kids program is a joint effort of the American Culinary Federation Chefs of Las Vegas and Cooperative Extension. Chefs for Kids Inc. is a nonprofit organization committed to eliminating malnutrition and hunger in children through education and awareness.

Awards for winning team, longest drive and closest to the pin on a par-3 hole are planned. Hole sponsorships are also available.

NATIONAL NURSES HEALTH INSTITUTE 5K PLANNED

The National Nurses Half Marathon or 5K race is set for 5:30 a.m. Oct. 13 in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area following the organization’s speakers series the previous day. Volunteers are needed. The cost is $55 by Sept. 30 or $65 after Oct. 1 for the 5K (3.1 miles) and $70 by Sept. 30 or $80 after Oct. 1 for the half-marathon (13.1 miles).

ROCKIN’ WALK PLANNED AT TPC SUMMERLIN

The fourth annual Rockin’ Walk is slated for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at TPC Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle. All attendees must park at the Suncoast, 9090 Alta Drive, and take the free shuttle.

SHRINERS GOLF TOURNAMENT PLANNED FOR OCTOBER AT TPC SUMMERLIN

The 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open golf tournament is planned for Oct. 14-20 at TPC Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle. The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is an official PGA Tour event. The 2013 tournament is set to feature more than 130 PGA Tour professionals competing for a $6 million purse, with a winner’s share of $1,080,000. All proceeds will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The event’s fourth annual Women’s Day luncheon, Kick Off Your Heels, is planned for Oct. 15. It will be catered and feature a guest speaker. Tickets are $25 per guest. The luncheon sold out in 2012, so early purchases are encouraged.

GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT PEDIATRIC RESEARCH

The second annual Scherr Madness Golf Tournament is set for 8 a.m. Oct. 19 at Red Rock Country Club’s Arroyo Course, 2250 Red Springs Drive.

The tournament is hosted by Drs. Scott and Rebecca Scherr, and all proceeds go to support pediatric research and Camp Oasis, a camp for children and teens living with inflammatory bowel disease.

LAS VEGAS CENTERS OFFERING VOLLEYBALL PLAY

The city of Las Vegas offers recreational volleyball opportunities at several of its sports and community centers.

HUMANA GUIDANCE CENTERS SPONSOR WALKING GROUPS

Humana Guidance Centers are offering free walking groups led by a certified personal trainer. The program aims to positively affect seniors’ health by motivating and engaging them to take action and improve their fitness level and mental outlook by learning the proper walking and stretching techniques.

Participants will receive a free pedometer and at the end of each outing can upload their steps at a Guidance Center computer kiosk or at home to tracks steps taken, distance and calories burned.

Leisure Connection for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is a social group that plans outings each month. REGISTRATION BEGINS FOR SPORTS AND RECREATION PROGRAMS

The North Las Vegas recreation division’s activity schedule of classes, sports and recreation programs is available.

NEW A.G.E. EVENTS FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES PLANNED

New A.G.E. for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is set from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive. The program offers a variety of activities and special events that promote individuality, self-esteem and independence.

The cost is $21 for one to three days, $28 for four days and $35 for five days each week.

SUMMER RECREATION EVENTS OPEN FOR YOUTHS AND TEENS

The Dula Gym’s Summer Open Recreation for youths and teens ages 10-18 is set to be open noon to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at 441 E. Bonanza Road. Youths can attend Fridays and Saturdays when the gym is available. The recreation periods include open gym and weekly competitions in games and sports and are free with RecPass for participants 18 or younger with parent/guardian approval.

The Lorenzi Adaptive Recreation Program for those ages 7 to 21 with disabilities is set from 1 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. Participants can enjoy a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming and movies.

CAMPGROUND REOPENED AT RED ROCK

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area’s developed campground has reopened as cooler temperatures begin.

Red Rock Campground is located within the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area approximately two miles east of the visitor center on state Route 159 (West Charleston Boulevard) and is the only developed campground within the conservation area.

It features 71 individual campsites and seven group campsites. Individual sites are $15 per site per night, and group campsites are $40 per site per night. Reservations for the group campsites are required and can be made by calling 702-515-5371 or visit rrc_reservations@blm.gov.

TAI CHI CLASSES SCHEDULED

Armed man killed by police in downtown Las Vegas identified

The Clark County coroner’s office identified a man who was shot and killed by police after he allegedly pointed a rifle at officers in a downtown apartment complex.
