Elliott Davis, an eighth-grader at Tarkanian Middle School, has been selected as Youth of the Year for the Southern Highlands Boys & Girls Club.

Elliott was chosen from more than 900 members based on his service to the club, community and family, academic success, strong moral character, life goals and public speaking ability.

He will now serve as an ambassador for the Southern Highlands Boys & Girls Club.

Elliott is the son of Darryl and Rosalind Raiford of Las Vegas.

Lacey Long, a junior at Southwest Career and Technical Academy, has been elected National Association Student Council president for Nevada.

She currently is serving as her school's student body president and plans to serve during her senior year.

Long has contributed to student government by strengthening leadership training for students, promoting volunteerism in the community and serving on the Youth Council for the American Lung Association.

As a student in her school's culinary program, Long was chosen to be a contestant in a national professional cooking show, which is scheduled to air soon.

Long is the daughter of Larry and Tracey Long of Las Vegas.

Brice Cook has achieved Eagle Scout status in the Boy Scouts of America.

For his Eagle project, Cook, a member of Troop 464, organized and helped make more than 300 fleece blankets and more than 100 pull toys for The Animal Foundation.

A junior at Miley Achievement Center, Cook maintains a 4.0 grade-point average and serves as student council president.

In his free time, he enjoys photography, camping, music and drawing.

Cook is the son of Russell and Melinda Cook of Henderson.

Zachariah Merced has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

A 2010 graduate of Green Valley High School, Merced is the son of Tina Merced of Henderson.

Ricky Martin has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

A 2001 graduate of Las Vegas High School, Martin received a bachelor's degree from UNLV in 2009.

He is the son of Melony Martin of North Las Vegas.

Jonathan Richter has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Richter received an associate's degree from the College of Southern Nevada in 2010.

He is the son of Rick and Remie Richter of Las Vegas.

Kourtney Willey of Las Vegas was named a peer educator for the fall 2012 semester at the University of Charleston in Charleston, W.Va.

Peer educators are upperclassmen who are willing to share their experiences with first-year students.

Daniel Ojeda has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. A 2010 graduate of Southeast Career Technical Academy, Ojeda is the son of Mary Ojeda of Las Vegas.

Stephanie Morales has been named to the honor roll for the winter term of the 2011-12 school year at Kent School in Kent, Conn.

Morales is in her junior year at the co ed college preparatory school.

She is the daughter of Victor Morales and Martha Cardenas, both of Las Vegas.

Al Galan has graduated from Army basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

A 2010 graduate of Liberty High School, Galan is the son of Melissa Crawford of Las Vegas and Alfred Galan of Stockbridge, Ga.

Brittain Ellis has graduated from Army basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

A 2007 graduate of Eldorado High School, Ellis is the son of Kelly Ellis of Las Vegas.

Aaron Andree has graduated from Army basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

Andree is the son of Jacqueline Riley of Las Vegas and Cary Andree of Bakersfield, Calif.
