Heat warning issued for Las Vegas, cooling stations to open

With forecasted highs of up to 111 degrees for the rest of the week, the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the Las Vegas Valley area.

The heat warning is in effect this afternoon through Friday, but the high temperatures could extend into the weekend.

Tuesday's high temperature reached 109 degrees in Las Vegas.

Weather service officials noted that the valley shouldn't get as hot as early July, when temperatures hit 113 and 114, tying previous highs for July 9 and 10, respectively.

Because of the high temperatures, cooling stations will be opened today to move the homeless and other individuals out of the heat and keep them hydrated, according to Clark County spokeswoman Stacey Welling.
