Henderson awards lobbying contract to former police chief

Henderson officials on Tuesday continued to reward one of the city’s former top employees with a hefty contract.

City Council members approved a two-year state lobbyist contract for $228,000 for Richard Perkins, the city’s former police chief.

Perkins retired as chief in 2008 after a 25-year policing career and started his lobbying career just a few months later. Henderson hired him on a $240,000, two-year contract in December of that year, jump-starting his business. The second-largest city in Nevada was his first client.

Perkins has more political experience than most ex-cops, however. The ex-officer spent 14 years at the Legislature, leaving in 2006. He was Assembly speaker in his final six years.

His client list has grown remarkably since 2008. Perkins’ company website boasts of 19 current or former clients, including Opportunity Village, Frias Transportation and Wynn Las Vegas.

Perkins’ contract isn’t his only income from public dollars. Records show that Perkins netted more than $8,000 from the Public Employees Retirement System of Nevada in January.

Council members approved Perkins’ contract extension without comment on its consent agenda.
