Las Vegas flirts with triple digits, settles for record 99

Maybe it's because of global warming.

Maybe it's because of the fireball that flew over Northern Nevada.

Or maybe it tends to get hot in the Southern Nevada desert come spring.

It reached 99 degrees Sunday in Las Vegas, a record high for April 22, according to the National Weather Service.

Sunday's temperature beat the previous high temperature for the date set in 1939, when it hit 97 degrees. The heat was measured at McCarran International Airport, the weather service's official recording station for Las Vegas.

Although temperatures flirted with 100 degrees all day, it never hit that mark , which would have been the first time modern-day Las Vegas saw 100-degree temperatures in April. The weather service has been collecting data since 1938.

Clay Morgan, a weather service meteorologist , said unofficial temperatures Sunday hit as high as 102 in some parts of Henderson and downtown Las Vegas .

Today's high is expected to reach 97 degrees, 1 degree below the all-time record for April 23 of 98 set in 1950. Tuesday's high is expected to be 89.

Temperatures are expected to continue to cool down later in the week because of a low-pressure system from the Pacific Ocean that could bring rain Wednesday and Thursday, Morgan said.
