Nevada medical school, healthcare network have high hopes for training deal

A deal between a Renown Health, a healthcare network, and the University of Nevada’s School of Medicine would expand the medical school and increase the number of physicians who train and practice in Northern Nevada, according to Renown Health.

Recommendations from the Steering Committee, a joint effort from the school and network, were adopted by Renown’s Board of Directors Tuesday, sealing the venture the committee has discussed for the past eight months.

The network’s board of directors also approved an initial $5 million expenditure for the next three years. Renown said further funding would depend on the state, donors, grants and other sources.

Partnership between Renown and the school would lead to new medical educational and research programs, expanding the school into a a full four-year campus, according to Renown.

The initial deal still requires approval from the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents, which will consider it June 5.
