North Las Vegas man sentenced to prison for machete attack

A 52-year-old North Las Vegas man was sentenced to 26 to 65 years in prison by District Judge Abbi Silver Thursday for splitting his ex-girlfriend’s scalp and nearly chopping off her arms with an 18-inch machete.

Armando Vergara-Martinez was found guilty in February of attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm and mayhem stemming from the March 2012 attack on Maria Del Carmen Gomez.

Gomez survived the attack in the parking lot of the North Las Vegas convenience store, located on Craig Road near North Fifth Street, where she worked.

Surgeons repaired her scalp and reattached her hands, and she spent several months as an advocate and spokeswoman for tougher laws against domestic violence before she died six months later from unrelated cancer. She was 53.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
