A 20-year-old woman is dead, and another woman has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, after a 40-ton NV Energy truck crashed into their car in North Las Vegas on Friday, police said.
Witnesses told North Las Vegas police the commercial crane truck ran a red light at the intersection of Centennial Parkway and Losee Road, striking a red Dodge Caliber about 12:40 p.m.
The North Las Vegas woman who was killed had been driving the car. Her 25-year-old female passenger is in extremely critical condition at University Medical Center. Another passenger, a 20-year-old female, and the truck driver were not seriously injured.
"The weight of that vehicle probably played a significant part in the seriousness of their injuries," officer Chrissie Coon said.
The crash is considered a result of "driver inattention," and there is no reason to think excessive speed or alcohol are factors, Coon said. The 47-year-old man driving the NV Energy truck has not been charged .
"Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in today's accident," NV Energy said in a statement. "We will continue to cooperate fully with North Las Vegas police in its investigation."
