One dead, one injured in car-bicycle accident

A collision between a sport utility vehicle and a bicyclist early Tuesday near Cheyenne Avenue and Buffalo Drive left the driver dead and the bicyclist in critical condition, Las Vegas police said.

The identity of the dead man was not released by authorities.

Police said the collision occurred at
4:45 a.m. at Cimarron Road and Soaring Gulls Drive. A 27-year-old man driving a 2000 Toyota Rav 4 was traveling north on Cimarron Road when his car hit the east curb near Sapphire Beach Lane. The vehicle then veered back into the travel lanes and struck the west curb at Soaring Gulls before going onto the sidewalk.

The vehicle then hit a block wall and a light pole and went back onto the street, striking a 53-year-old woman who was riding a bike southbound on Cimarron.

The bicyclist, Ilene Sorenson, struck the sport utility vehicle's windshield.

Police said the driver of the Rav 4 was pronounced dead at the scene. Sorenson was taken to University Medical Center.

The incident was the 12th traffic fatality in 2011 under the jurisdiction of Las Vegas police.
