Police say DUI suspected in fatal west Las Vegas Valley crash

Updated April 30, 2024 - 12:49 pm

The Clark County coroner’s office identified an elderly victim killed in a crash with a motorist suspected of DUI late Sunday in the west valley.

He was Adolph Weiss, 78, of Las Vegas, the coroner’s office said.

The Metropolitan Police Department said that the two-vehicle crash occurred about 10:40 p.m. near South Buffalo Drive and Peacock Avenue, near Alta Drive.

Juan De Leon’s Honda Accord was southbound on Buffalo when he crossed onto opposite traffic, hitting Weiss’ Hyundai Sonata head-on, according to police, who allege De Leon was speeding.

Both motorists were taken to University Medical Center, where Weiss died and where De Leon, 23, was being treated for moderate injuries, police said.

De Leon was booked in absentia at the Clark County Detention Center, police said.

Jail logs show that De Leon is facing one count each of DUI resulting in death and reckless driving resulting in death or substantial injuries.

De Leon purportedly remained hospitalized and didn’t appear in Las Vegas Justice Court on Tuesday morning, according to records that also show he’s being held without bail.
