Police stepping up patrols for Super Bowl weekend

Southern Nevada police are urging football fans to arrange a designated driver before cracking open beers at their Super Bowl parties.

The Nevada Highway Patrol and police from Las Vegas, Boulder City, Henderson and North Las Vegas will be ramping up patrols this weekend.

Officers will also be setting up DUI checkpoints in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Last year's Super Bowl weekend brought three fatal accidents in Nevada, including one on Super Bowl Sunday in Clark County.

Police remind party hosts to ensure guests have a sober driver to take them home, and to designate a time during the game to stop serving alcohol.

Money for the extra patrols comes from a Joining Forces Grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety.
