School evacuated after classroom fills with smoke

Faith Lutheran Junior/Senior High School was evacuated Thursday afternoon after chemicals boiling on a hot plate caused smoke in a classroom.

Seven adults, including faculty and a maintenance worker, were treated on scene for smoke inhalation and respiratory irritation, a Clark County Fire Department spokeswoman said. One person was taken to Summerlin Hospital Medical Center.

The smoke started about 12:30 p.m., and hazardous materials experts investigated the area and air quality before students and staff returned to the building two hours later, the spokeswoman said.

No students were in the class, as a teacher was boiling down the chemicals for safer disposal, school Executive Director Steve Buuck said.
