Summer day shelter for men to open Thursday

Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada will open its summer day shelter for men on Thursday at a new location that can accommodate 130 men at one time.

The nonprofit’s old location, within the same building as the new space, had room for 100 men at a time, said Leslie Carmine, spokeswoman for Catholic Charities.

Thanks to a grant from the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition and the Committee on Homelessness, Catholic Charities was able to remodel the first floor of a building at its Donald W. Reynolds St. Vincent Plaza, 1501 Las Vegas Blvd. North, to house the summer day shelter, Carmine said.

“When temperatures rise, so do (the number of) people who need help,” she said Monday. “Especially when it gets over 110 degrees, it becomes something that is really needed.”

The summer day shelter will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, and will remain open through Sept. 30.

The new space will provide more privacy for people who need to shower and use the restroom. It’s also closer to the dining room and the client service area, Carmine said. The new area also has room for a computer station, where men can check email and search for jobs, she said.

The organization’s night shelter remains open year-round from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. It has 600 beds, but the average number of beds used is around 500, Carmine said.
