Tighter fire restrictions in place in western Nevada

Dryer weather, significantly above-average temperatures and several man-made fires have prompted officials to implement indefinite fire restrictions for western Nevada starting June 28.

According to officials, vegetation areas along the Nevada-California border are much dryer than usual for this time of year.

The area where the restrictions are in effect stretch from Rye Patch State Recreation Area northeast of Carson City to Walker Lake, approximately 300 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

People are restricted from:

- Building a fire outside of a developed campground or picnic area

- Smoking outside of a vehicle in a developed campground or picnic area

- Use of any explosive or fireworks.

Officials will be aggressively citing those who do not follow the restrictions. Violations can result in fines of up to $10,000 or six months in jail.
