Week in Review: Reporters’ Notebook

Thirteen of the 18 Las Vegas mayoral candidates showed up for last week's Veterans In Politics forum, which was held in the Las Vegas City Council chambers. They sat where the council members sit during meetings, and there was a pool on who would try to snag the mayor's chair in the middle.

"We had an internal bet on who is going to sit in the mayor's seat, and we all lost," announced Steve Sanson, president and director of Veterans In Politics.

Favorites in the pool were Steve Ross, Carolyn Goodman, Chris Giunchigliani and George Harris. The chair was occupied, however, by long-shot candidate Ed Uehling.

"I have to get used to it," he said.

So far, Carolyn Goodman has flip-flopped on the all-important showgirls issue.

At first, she said she wouldn't keep the showgirls her husband, Oscar, uses as part of his mayoral schtick should she succeed him. She made her campaign kickoff speech flanked by two showgirls, however, and at various times has said she will keep them around or -- perhaps -- find a feathered headdress for her husband.

She's clear on this, though: "I am not having the Chippendales dancers," she said. "They are not Las Vegas."

Gov. Brian Sandoval spent Wednesday morning reading Dr. Seuss to elementary school children in Reno as part of Read Across America Day.

The National Education Association event is held each year on Seuss' birthday to encourage youngsters to read.

There was no word on the kids' reaction when Sandoval promised he "would not, could not" raise taxes in a house, with a mouse, in a box or with a fox.
