Woman critical after shooting that Las Vegas police say was accidental

A woman was in critical condition Saturday evening at University Medical Center following a shooting police suspect was accidental.

Las Vegas police Lt. Steve Herpolsheimer said the woman had a gunshot wound to her abdomen when she and her boyfriend showed up at the hospital about 10:07 a.m.

The boyfriend said they had been at a motel near Dean Martin Drive and Hacienda Avenue and were "playing with a gun" that fired, injuring the woman, Herpolsheimer said.

Herpolsheimer said although police suspect the shooting was an accident, they will seek more information from the woman once she recovers.

"The best witness is in surgery," he said.
