Woman in wheelchair dies after vehicle hits her in Las Vegas

Updated January 5, 2019 - 12:04 am

A 59-year-old woman in a wheelchair died Friday night after she was struck by a vehicle near downtown Las Vegas.

The crash was reported about 10:25 p.m. at East Bonanza Road and North Wardelle Street, near North Mojave Road. Metropolitan Police Department traffic investigators have determined that a 2012 Honda Civic was heading east on Bonanza at the same time the woman, who was operating a motorized wheelchair, was crossing south on Bonanza at Wardelle inside a marked crosswalk. The Honda, driven by a 31-year-old man, struck the wheelchair, throwing the woman into the roadway, police said.

She died “despite all life-saving measures” at University Medical Center, where she was taken with critical injuries, police said. Her death was the second traffic death investigated by Metro this year.

The Honda driver remained at the scene and was not suspected of impairment. It was not clear what caused him to hit the woman, but police said Saturday that the investigation was ongoing.

The woman will be identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.
