Inmate dies at Northern Nevada Correctional Center

A Nevada inmate serving more than 100 years died Monday in Carson City, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Russell Gates, 69, died of a chronic medical condition at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center.

Gates was serving consecutive sentences of convictions that included sexual assault of a victim under 14 and lewdness with a minor. In all, he was convicted on nine counts. Each of his sentences, some of which were to be served out consecutively and some concurrently, had the potential to be life sentences.

Gates had been in Nevada’s corrections system since 2010.
