Reno wildlife workers help 4 orphaned bear cubs

RENO — A Reno wildlife sanctuary is working to take care of four orphaned black bear cubs.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife rescued the cubs last week from near Stateline. Their mother apparently died of natural causes and the cubs had been living under a walkway since their birth in January.
The cubs are being cared for at Animal Ark, a Reno-area wildlife refuge. Ark officials will care for the cubs through summer and fall with a minimum amount of human contact in hopes of releasing them into the wild after hibernation. When it’s time to hibernate, the cubs will be taken to the forest and placed in an artificial den.
Animal Ark has taken care of 22 orphan cubs since 1997, 17 of which have been successfully released into the wild.
