Sparks couple killed in crash identified; man facing DUI charges

SPARKS — Authorities have identified a Sparks couple killed in a weekend crash involving a 35-year-old man jailed on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said 77-year-old Mario Guansing and 74-year-old Erlinda Guansing died when the car they were in was hit from behind late Saturday by a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Mario Cortez of Sparks.

The Guansings were pronounced dead at Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Cortez is accused of running away before he was found and arrested not far from the crash on Pyramid Way near Disc Drive.

He was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and taken to the Washoe County jail pending an initial court appearance on charges including felony DUI causing death and felony leaving the scene of a fatal crash.
