At least 58 dead: Shootings surpass worst in U.S. history

Las Vegas police put the death toll at more than 58 in Sunday night’s shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival near Mandalay Bay. That makes it the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The previous list of the nation’s worst shootings:*

1. Pulse Orlando nightclub in Orlando, Fla. — 49 killed, 50 wounded (June 12, 2016)

2. Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. — 32 killed, 17 injured (April 16, 2007)

3. Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. — 26 killed (Dec. 14, 2012)

4. Luby’s Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas — 23 killed (Oct. 16, 1991)

5. McDonald’s restaurant in San Ysidro, Calif. — 21 killed, 19 wounded (July 18, 1984)

6. University of Texas Tower in Austin, Texas — 14 killed, 31 wounded (Aug. 1, 1966)

7. Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. — 13 killed, 24 wounded (April 20, 1999)

8. Edmond Post Office in Edmond, Okla. — 14 killed (Aug. 20, 1986)

9. Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, Calif. — 14 killed (Dec. 2, 2015)

10. American Civic Association, Binghamton, N.Y. — 13 killed, four wounded (April 3, 2009)
