Gas leak closes North Las Vegas street, high school evacuated

A Tuesday morning gas leak has closed a North Las Vegas street and led to the evacuation of a high school.

North Las Vegas police responded just before 7 a.m. to reports that a construction crew had hit a gas line in the 400 block of West Brooks Avenue, between North Commerce and Revere streets. The road was closed to traffic while the North Las Vegas Fire Department handled the clean-up, said North Las Vegas police spokesperson Chrissie Coon.

Teachers at Desert Rose High School were evacuated and traffic traveling to and from the school was stopped. Fire Capt. Cedric Williams said the leak should be cleared before school begins. A nearby bus depot also was evacuated as a precaution.

The road was still closed just before 8 a.m.
