Motorcyclist dies in southwest Las Vegas crash

Updated March 29, 2017 - 5:08 pm

A young motorcyclist who was hospitalized in critical condition died after a Wednesday afternoon crash in the southwest valley.

The Metropolitan Police Department said officers responded just before noon to reports of a crash involving a Honda sport motorcycle and a 1998 Toyota Camry in the area of West Flamingo Road and South Durango Drive.

The motorcyclist, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was transported to the University Medical Center, where he died, Metro officer Michael Rodriguez said.

Metro’s investigation showed the 85-year-old Toyota driver failed to yield to the motorcyclist while turning left onto Durango Drive. The victim was thrown from his motorcycle, police said.

The Toyota’s driver stayed on scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said he showed no signs of intoxication. It’s unknown whether he will be charged.

Flamingo Road was closed in both directions between Durango Drive and Riley Street for about five hours Wednesday while police investigated.

The Clark County coroner will identify the motorcyclist after family has been notified.

This is the 32nd traffic-related fatality investigated by Metro in 2017.
