One person dead, another injured in single-car accident in North Las Vegas

One person is dead and another is in critical condition following a crash that cleaved the vehicle in two on Thursday.

Just before 4:30 a.m., North Las Vegas police responded to the crash on Camino Eldorado, just north of Tropical Parkway.

Officers discovered an unresponsive 23-year-old man, identified by the Clark County coroner’s office as James Monterio, and a severely injured 22-year-old woman. Monterio was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman was transported to University Medical Center in critical condition.

According to police, the woman was driving her 2002 Honda Civic north on Camino Eldorado at an excessive rate of speed. She lost control of the car, causing it to slam into a tree and eject both occupants. The force of the impact split the Civic into two pieces.

Police believe that alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

This was the fifth fatal accident in North Las Vegas in 2013.
