Flash flood warning issued for Kyle Canyon area

A flash flood warning is in effect until 9:45 p.m. for the east half of the Carpenter 1 burn area in Kyle Canyon, the National Weather Service announced Friday evening.

Showers were already dying off about 7:30 p.m. over Harris Springs and Rainbow Springs canyons, but areas that saw the heaviest rain received up to an inch, meteorologist Reid Wolcott said.

The rain, which fell over less populated parts of the canyon and is pretty much over, Wolcott said, is expected to flow through the Harris Springs Wash and into a detention basin in the northwest valley.

Improvements on flood control in the area of the detention basin should prevent significant flash flooding on roads like Grand Teton, but the warning is in effect until 9:45 p.m.

The west side of the valley might see sprinkles Friday night as storm cells over the Sheep Mountain Range move to the south, but it’s unlikely, Wolcott said.

Slight chances for rain will linger overnight and into Saturday, Wolcott said. The greatest chance for moisture in the valley, about 15 percent, will be this evening when temperatures will dip to about 78, with light and variable winds.

Stormy conditions over the mountains Saturday will be similar to Friday’s, but not as strong, Wolcott said.

Chances for rainfall in the valley will drop to 10 percent Saturday as Las Vegas enters its first long streak of triple-digit weather, the National Weather Service said.

Starting Saturday, the weather will warm up to a high of 101 degrees, officially entering Las Vegas into its first prolonged period of triple-digits that should run through next week, meteorologist Mike Paddock said. Things will start to cool down to 80 degrees by nightfall.

Temperatures will continue to rise through the end of the weekend with highs on Sunday expected to reach 104 degrees before jumping to 107 on Monday, the weather service predicts.
