The Las Vegas Valley will be so hot this week that three nonprofit organizations opened cooling stations Tuesday.
The high temperature dropped just one degree Tuesday after the valley hit a record high of 108 degrees Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds, which are predicted to blow southwest at 25 to 30 mph, might not do much to relieve the heat, and there will be no clouds to shield people from the sun. The day’s low should drop to at least 84 degrees.
The weather service placed the valley under an excessive heat watch from Thursday to Monday, warning of the danger of heat-related illnesses.
Las Vegas is expected to reach a record high of 110 degrees Thursday, and increase to 111 degrees over the weekend.
Cooling stations will be open every day for the homeless and others at the following locations:
- Catholic Charities, 1511 Las Vegas Blvd. North, near Foremaster Lane, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is open only for men.
- The Salvation Army, 33 W. Owens Ave., near Stocker Street, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is open for adults.
- The Shade Tree, 1 W. Owens Ave., near Main Street, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This is open only for women and children.
