Wind moving out, freezing temperatures on their way

The winds that rattled the Las Vegas Valley early this week moved out Wednesday, and a freeze warning for parts of the valley is in place for Thanksgiving night.

Wednesday's high temperature came just after midnight at 59 degrees, said National Weather Service meteorologist Chad Shafer. It was a rare day because a cold front moved through, keeping temperatures at or below 58 degrees the rest of the day.

Winds calmed Wednesday afternoon and weren't expected to make another appearance at least through the weekend, Shafer said.

Despite winds diminishing, "temperatures will plummet once the sun goes down," meteorologist Justin Pullin said Wednesday.

Thursday morning will see a low temperature of 38, Shafer said.

Thanksgiving Day will be slightly colder than Wednesday with a high of 53 and official low of 37, but parts of the valley will experience lower temperatures.

A valley-wide freeze warning is forecast 10 p.m. Thursday until 8 a.m. Friday, meaning some areas may see the first freezing and sub-freezing temperatures since summer. Parts of the valley, especially on the outskirts of the city, should prepare for temperatures as low as 32 degrees, Shafer said.

The National Weather Service advises that the following areas protect the "Three P's" — plants, pets, and pipes — from the cold: Anthem, Seven Hills, Mountain's Edge, Nellis Air Force Base, Mesquite and Moapa Valley.

Temperatures this Thanksgiving weekend are below average, Shafer said, as normal highs this time of year are about 61 degrees.
