Centennial boys, Silverado girls roll to state titles

Garrett Page is no stranger to pressure-packed bowling matches.

Two years ago, Page was a member of a Centennial team that won the state tournament by a single pin over Tech.

So in Friday’s Division I title match, the junior didn’t mind having breathing room.

Page rolled a match-high 279 in a 705 series to buoy the Bulldogs in a 9-0 sweep over Green Valley at The Orleans.

“It was a lot closer in 2011,” Page said with a laugh. “But we all bowled great today. It was a total team effort, and we all just brought it together.”

Silverado’s girls downed Cimarron-Memorial 9-0 for their first state championship since the 2009-10 season.

Centennial outscored the Gators 825-750 in the first game and 797-674 in the second game to create a 198-pin lead heading into the final game.

“It was definitely our goal to get back to the final, especially after the disappointment of last year, falling one game short,” Bulldogs coach Greg Seiden said. “It was nice to have a cushion.”

In the key second game, Page rolled 11 strikes, including six straight, en route to his 279. His only other mark came in the sixth frame, where the right-hander left a 10-pin standing after a first attempt. Still, he picked up the spare with ease.

“The very first game of tryouts, Garrett bowled a 300,” Seiden said, noting Page has a 213 average. “So I told him everything for the rest of the year is going to be downhill. So to come back with the 279 to win the state championship, I think he’s proven that he can top that.”

Trevor Lilley had a 616 series for Centennial, finishing his high school career with a strike that capped a score of 225 in the third game. The senior also rolled a 222 in the first game.

Sophomore Nathan Hanuscin had a team-high 647 series for Green Valley, rolling eight strikes in the third game en route to a 255.

In the girls final, the Skyhawks counted on two underclassman to edge the Spartans 2,089-1,946 in total-pin count.

Sophomore Michelle Matsumoto powered Silverado with a 234 in the second game and a match-high 630 series.

Skyhawks freshman Megan Philippi added a 530 series that was highlighted by a match-high 238.

“These girls have worked hard all season and have been consistent all season,” Silverado coach Mark Parantala said. “They kept picking up spares and pushed hard all the way through.”

The Skyhawks used their depth to jump to a 4-0 advantage, taking the first game 671-617 before muscling their way to a 787-708 victory in the second game.

Carli Stafford paced the Spartans with games of 210 and 224. She posted a 621 series.
