Bud O’Dea Classic: Coronado boys claim top two spots, win team title

Coronado’s Tom Dougherty and Eddie Smisson took the top two spots in the sophomore boys race to lead the Cougars to the team title at the Bud O’Dea Classic on Tuesday at Desert Breeze.

Dougherty won the 2.5-mile race in 13 minutes, 49 seconds. Smisson was second in 14:11 followed by Valley’s Donovan Jones (14:24), Centennial’s Eduardo Lopez-Cortz (14:26) and Faith Lutheran’s Aidan Baughan (14:28).

The Cougars finished with with 55 points, nine points ahead of second-place Centennial. Green Valley was third with 90, and Arbor View was fourth with 92.

In the freshman boys race, Centennial’s Noah Norris won in 14:38, but the Bulldogs couldn’t catch Green Valley, which took the team title with 35 points.

Centennial was second with 59, followed by Faith Lutheran (84) and Palo Verde (87).

Green Valley’s Esondre Christian finished second individually in 14:40, and Boulder City’s Ethan Potter was third in 14:42.

Centennial’s Josephine Ruggieri won the sophomore girls race in 16:42. Foothill’s Erica Schulz was second in 17:00, followed by Bishop Gorman’s Jayden Krmpotich (17:15) and Ishani Meeks (17:16).

Gorman won the team title with 61 points, and Coronado was second with 91.

In the freshman girls race, Faith Lutheran took two of the top six spots to claim the team title with 30 points. Centennial was second with 37, and Palo Verde was third with 69.

Gorman’s Emilia Puskas won the race by more than a minute, finishing in 16:10. Coronado’s Kylee Baird was second in 17:10, and Centennial’s Ashley Roberts finished third in 17:22.
