CROSS COUNTRY: Green Valley boys claim Spartan Pre-Region Invitational title

Green Valley’s Omar Rubio finished first in the 3.1-mile race Saturday, and the Gators’ boys cross country team won the Spartan Pre-Region Invitational at Craig Ranch Park.

Green Valley finished with 35 points, and Arbor View finished second with 37 points. Desert Oasis rounded out the top three with 105.

Rubio edged Arbor View’s Ian Jackson by 1.2 seconds to win the individual title in 16:15.1.

Arbor View’s Noah Ayala (16:29.7) and Tim Myers (16:41) finished in third and fourth, respectively, and Green Valley’s Milton Amezcua finished in fifth in 16:42.8.

GIRLS

At Craig Ranch Park, Green Valley had three of the top five finishers and scored 30 points to win the Spartan Pre-Region Invitational.

Shadow Ridge finished in second place with 64 points, and Team Australia edged Arbor View for third.

Team Australia’s Olivia Weston won the 3.1-mile race with a time of 19:55.7, nearly 10 seconds faster than second-place finisher Amy Amezcua of Green Valley (20:04).

Green Valley’s Mia Smith was third in 20:16, and teammate Sierra Rivera finished fifth (21:27.7).
