SMALL SCHOOLS: Boulder City boys, Virgin Valley girls win

Boulder City’s Evan Clouse and Chandler Hawkins finished first and second Friday to lead the Eagles’ boys cross country team to victory in the Class 3A Southern League meet at Mountain View Park in Laughlin.

Clouse won the 3.1-mile race in 18 minutes, 22 seconds, and Hawkins finished at 18:26.

Boulder City finished with 24 points and advanced to next week’s state meet. Virgin Valley was second with 37 and Moapa Valley third with 71.

In the girls meet, Boulder City’s Jessica Tobler outdistanced the competition by more than three minutes, winning in 20:44. Virgin Valley’s Kaitlyn Frump was second in 24:08 to help the Bulldogs to the team title and a trip to state.

Virgin Valley had 18 points, and Moapa Valley was second with 40.

CLASS 2A — Laughlin took three of the top five spots to win the Class 2A Southern League boys meet, with Brian Romero crossing first in 18:31.

The Cougars had 32 points and West Wendover 35. Both advanced to the state meet.

Laughlin also won the girls meet, finishing with 21 points. The Meadows was second at 38, and both advanced to state.

High school notebook: Coronado boys, girls eye state titles

With less than a week remaining in the season, Coronado tennis coach Dave Willingham is clinging to two dreams, as his boys and girls teams chase Class 5A state titles.
