CROSS COUNTRY: Depth carries Arbor View girls to freshman title

Arbor View’s girls cross country team didn’t have a runner at the front of the pack in Tuesday’s Southern Nevada Freshman Meet at Desert Breeze Park.

But the Aggies placed four in the top 19 to capture the team title with 56 points, six ahead of second-place Palo Verde. Shadow Ridge was third at 89.

The Meadows’ Ellen Hirsberg won the 2.5-mile race in 16 minutes, 28.8 seconds.

Centennial’s Delani Dietrich (17:13.1) was second, and Boulder City’s Sierra Selinger (17:18.1) was third.

Neally Peters (18:06.1) and Chloe Boyens (18:06.4) finished eighth and ninth, respectively, to lead Arbor View.

Green Valley’s girls took the sophomore race with 65 points, topping Palo Verde (76) and Centennial (87).

Centennial’s Kayla Roberts won the race in 15:41.

Foothill’s Karina Haymore (16:10.7) was second, and Palo Verde’s Emma Wahlenmaier (16:28.0) third.

Green Valley’s Lenny Rubi won the sophomore boys race in 13:45.0. Valley’s Josh Nyberg (13:54.6) was second, with Centennial’s Braedon Tarone (14:03.3) third and Basic’s Steven Birch (14:07.9) fourth.

Basic took the team title with 36 points. Green Valley was second at 71, and Palo Verde third at 89.

Arbor View also won the freshman boys race with 59 points. Coronado was second with 81, and Shadow Ridge third with 91.

Pahrump Valley’s Bryce Odegard won the race in 13:52.7. Basic’s Seth Blackwell (14:27.8) was second, and Palo Verde’s Trevor Goldsmith (14:37.1) was third.

Cameron Barnes was Arbor View’s top runner, placing 10th in 15:24.2.
