Panther girls breeze to victory in Lake Mead Invitational

It didn't take long to determine which team would win the Lake Mead Invitational's girls large-school cross country race Saturday.

Palo Verde took the top four spots and cruised to the team title at Veterans Memorial Park.

Emma Wahlenmaier led the Panther charge, winning the 3.1-mile race in 20 minutes, 14.6 seconds.

She was closely followed by teammates Molly Marias (20:24.0), Grace Edwards (20:28.3) and Kate Vanderstelt (20:30.5) as the Panthers had a team score of 17. Shadow Ridge was second with 95 points, two fewer than Green Valley. Coronado took fourth with 107 points.

Tech nosed out Faith Lutheran for the girls small-school title. Both teams had 44 points, but Tech's sixth runner finished ahead of the Crusaders' No. 6 runner to earn the tiebreaker edge. The Meadows was third with 103 points.

Del Sol's Ingrid Zarate won the race in 21:32.8.

Sierra Vista's Sarriah Brown was second in 21:39.0, and Boulder City's Sierra Selinger was third in 21:46.7.

Austin Rogers ran away with the boys large-school race and helped Green Valley win the team competition with 46 points. Basic was second with 65, and Arbor View took third with 132.

Rogers won the race in 16:21.6, and teammate Lenny Rubi was second in 17:12.9.

Shadow Ridge's Jonathon Blaine finished third in 17:14.0.

Faith Lutheran's Chase Wood posted the day's fastest time (16:21.1) en route to winning the boys small-school race.

Pahrump Valley's Bryce Odegard was second in 17:07. Clark's Brendan Palmer was third (18:07.4), and teammate Liam Jones fourth (18:12.2) to help the Chargers to the team title with 46 points. Pahrump was second with 97, and Tech took third with 99.
