Calvary Chapel Capsule Preview

Coach: Cliff Frazier (first year)

2007 record: 5-3 (2-2 Southern League)

Returning starters: Five offense, five defense

Top players: LB/OT Matt Kinzer (Sr.), WR/CB Juliene Mejia (Sr.), OG/DL Dylan Gallop (Sr.)

Top newcomers: QB Cody Taylor, QB Hunter Rodriguez, WR Cody Moreno, WR/SS Tyler Moore, WR/LB Kendall Nelson

Base offensive set: Spread

Base defensive set: 4-3

Outlook: As the Lions shift from 8- to 11-man football and install a new spread attack under former Basic coach Frazier, Taylor and Rodriguez are in a battle for the starting quarterback role in training camp.

Kinzer has moved from center to tackle, and is “probably the most physical” player on the team, an area in which Calvary Chapel needs to improve, Frazier said.

“I think we can have a good season,” he said. “We’ve got to get more physical. They play the game with passion, but we’re not yet physical enough to get where we need to be.”
