The junior won the Division I Sunset Region meet at Veterans’ Memorial Park, covering the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 11.1 seconds, and helped the Bulldogs to the team title with 19 points.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Centennial

The senior won the Division I Sunset Region meet at Veterans’ Memorial Park, completing the 3.1-mile race in 18 minutes, 27.6 seconds, more than a minute ahead of her nearest competitor. The Bulldogs won the team title.

The senior carried 28 times for 288 yards and two touchdowns and completed 8 of 16 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wolves to a 35-27 win over Coronado that wrapped up the Southeast League’s No. 2 seed for the Sunrise Region playoffs.

The senior rushed 38 times for 264 yards and four touchdowns and returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown in the Diamondbacks’ 42-35 win at Bonanza.

The senior had 51 assists and five kills to help the Gaels to a 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18 Southwest League title-clinching win at Centennial.

HEAD OF THE CLASS

ARBOR VIEW — Girls soccer forward Breanna Larkin had two goals an assist in a 5-0 win over Spring Valley. Boys soccer midfielder James Drye scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Spring Valley.

CENTENNIAL — Football wide receiver Brandan Harley had six receptions for 209 yards and a touchdown in a 49-21 loss to Bishop Gorman.

CIMARRON-MEMORIAL — Girls cross country runner Julianna Brooks placed 16th in 20 minutes, 57 seconds in the Sunset Region meet, earning an individual berth in the state meet. Boys soccer midfielder Nico DeLaTorre scored two goals in a 4-1 win over Legacy and had two goals and an assist in a 5-2 win over Bonanza that helped the Spartans clinch the Southwest League title.

DESERT OASIS — Football wide receiver Shawn Sanchez caught two passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. His 58-yard reception with less than a minute to play set up the winning touchdown in a 42-35 victory at Bonanza. Girls cross country runner Brooke Locey placed 10th in the Sunset Region meet.

FAITH LUTHERAN — Girls cross country runner Jessica Scamman placed fourth in the Division I-A Southern Region meet in 22 minutes, 6 seconds.

GREEN VALLEY — Football safety Giovanni Hernandez made 14 tackles, broke up six passes and had an interception in a 28-6 win over Silverado. Girls cross country runner Sara Braverman finished second overall and helped the Gators win the team title at the Division I Sunrise Region meet.

PALO VERDE — Girls cross country runner Kate Vanderstelt placed eighth in 20 minutes, 52 seconds in the Sunset Region meet. Boys cross country runner Andrew Goldsmithfinished 10th in 17:25 in the Sunset Region meet, helping the Panther team finish second.

SHADOW RIDGE — Football running back Cody Alfar rushed for 192 yards and three touchdowns in a 32-7 win over Spring Valley.

SIERRA VISTA — Boys soccer forward Miles McRae scored twice in a 2-2 tie against Durango. Girls soccer goalkeeper Dejah Burchfield stopped all 15 shots on goal she faced in regulation time of a 1-0 overtime loss to Bishop Gorman.

SILVERADO — Girls cross country runner Rachel Katz was the team’s top finisher in the Sunrise Region meet, placing 40th.

Coronado girls down Gorman for 5A volleyball region title

The Coronado girls volleyball team swept Bishop Gorman to win the Class 5A Southern Region final Saturday at Palo Verde. Both teams advance to the state tournament.
