HEAD OF THE CLASS: Riley’s game-winning hits give Basic tournament title

The sophomore catcher delivered a pair of game-winning hits on the final day of the Blazer Spring Bash to lead the Wolves to the Steven Janvrin Championship. Riley had a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Basic a 10-9 win over Galena in the semifinals, then delivered a three-run double in the top of the seventh in a 4-2 victory over Cimarron-Memorial in the championship game.

Desert Oasis
The senior pitcher/outfielder was 7-for-8 with three RBIs, four runs and four stolen bases in the semifinals and championship game of the 6A Division of the Lions Tournament in San Diego, helping the Diamondbacks claim the title. Van Kuren also pitched a five-hitter in the semifinals, and was awarded the 6A Division Most Valuable Player award.

The junior pitcher/shortstop was 6-for-12 with a double, a homer and three RBIs and picked up a pair of saves in the circle to help the Crusaders to the title in the Crusader Invitational. Foley struck out six in 5 2/3 innings.

The freshman set a school record of 2 minutes, 4.81 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley at the Spring Break Open Dual meet.

The senior distance runner posted a time of 4 minutes, 9.94 seconds to win the 1,600-meter run at the Las Vegas Track Classic at Desert Oasis. Braxton also won the 800 in 1:53.31.

ARBOR VIEW — Softball player Kayla Stephens went 3-for-3 with three doubles, two RBIs and three runs in an 8-3 win over Durango. Boys golfer Sam Dickey was the medalist in a Northwest League match at Canyon Gate with a 3-over-par 75.
BOULDER CITY — Baseball player Nolan Desantis went 13-for-17 with five RBIs and four stolen bases at the Anaheim Lions Tournament.
CENTENNIAL — Boys volleyball player Grant Nelson had 39 assists and seven aces in a 3-2 win over Arbor View. Softball player Ava Dolan was 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs and four RBIs in a 7-5 victory over Fernley.
CIMARRON-MEMORIAL — Baseball player Todd Danzeisen went 7-for-9 with a double, a triple, a homer, five RBIs and five runs and also allowed two earned runs in six innings on the mound to help the Spartans to a 4-1 record and second-place finish in the Blazer Spring Bash.
DESERT OASIS — Softball pitcher Elsy Guzman was 4-for-4 with two triples, four runs and two RBIs and pitched a five-hitter in a 15-3 win over Legacy.
GREEN VALLEY — Softball player Tara Hilton went 3-for-6 with two doubles and three RBIs in two games.
SHADOW RIDGE — Baseball player Jake Wilson went 8-for-11 with five runs and six RBIs and pitched a complete game to help the Mustangs to a 3-1 record in the Blazer Spring Bash.
SIERRA VISTA — Softball player Brendee Ford went 6-for-8 with three RBIs and two runs in three games.
SILVERADO — Baseball player Mike Janosik picked up the win against Legacy after throwing 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out four.
