The senior won the Southeast League race by more than a minute, finishing the 3.1-mile race in 18 minutes, 42.8 seconds, to lead the Cougars to the team title.

The junior quarterback rushed for 89 yards and had TD runs of 2, 1, 2, 3 and 10 yards and completed 8 of 10 passes for 212 yards in a 44-20 win over Cheyenne. The victory gave the Chargers their first playoff berth since 2002.

The freshman topped Coronado’s Cassell King 6-3, 6-2 to win the Division I state singles championship.

The senior grinded out a pair of three-set victories on the final day, including a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win over Palo Verde’s Annie Walker in the final, to win the Division I state singles crown.

HEAD OF THE CLASS

BISHOP GORMAN — Girls tennis player Amber Del Rosario was 3-0 in singles against Palo Verde to lead the Gaels to a 10-8 victory for their third consecutive state team title.

BONANZA — Girls volleyball player Hayley Huntsman had a total of 55 assists and eight aces in two matches.

CORONADO — Girls golfer Natalie Yamamoto shot 14-over-par 158 over 36 holes to place sixth at the Division I state tournament.

DESERT OASIS — Girls soccer midfielder Cassidy Motis had a goal and an assist and also saw time in goal in a 5-0 victory over Legacy. Boys tennis player Ben Gajardo advanced to the semifinals of the Division I state singles tournament.

FAITH LUTHERAN — Girls volleyball outside hitter Courtney Hansen had a total of 44 kills, eight aces and 25 digs to help the Crusaders to a 5-1 record and a third-place finish in their division at the Nike Tournament of Champions.

GREEN VALLEY — Girls soccer forward Kayla Anderson had a goal and two assists in a 3-0 win over Rancho. Boys cross country runner Austin Rogers won the Northeast League race, covering the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 47.9 seconds, to lead the Gators to the team title.

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Girls volleyball player Aariel Armstrong had a total of 14 kills and seven aces in matches against Needles and Pahranagat Valley.

PALO VERDE — Boys soccer player Griffin Mallas scored two goals in a 4-0 win over Spring Valley, and had the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Durango. Girls soccer player Serenity Grim had a total of six goals in wins over Durango and Spring Valley.

SHADOW RIDGE — Girls soccer player Lindsay Irwin scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Spring Valley.

SIERRA VISTA — Boys soccer goalkeeper Alberto Vazquez made three saves to get the shutout in a 2-0 win over Arbor View. Girls soccer forward Sophia Omidiji had four goals in a 12-0 win over Durango, and one goal in a 3-1 loss to Shadow Ridge.

SILVERADO — Girls cross country runner Anna Pineda was the team’s top finisher at the Northeast League meet, placing 25th.

TECH — Boys cross country runner Miguel Garcia placed fourth in the Sunrise League race with a time of 17 minutes, 40.1 seconds for 3.1 miles, helping the Roadrunners win the team title. Girls cross country runner Abigail Torres-Jimenez placed eighth at the Sunrise League meet with a time of 22:58.0 to lead the Roadrunners to the team title.

Coronado girls down Gorman for 5A volleyball region title

The Coronado girls volleyball team swept Bishop Gorman to win the Class 5A Southern Region final Saturday at Palo Verde. Both teams advance to the state tournament.
