Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of the week’s top high school sports events.

CROSS COUNTRY

Saturday — Pirate Invitational at Clark County Fairgrounds, 8 a.m.

While many teams head out of town for invitationals, Moapa Valley will host the weekend’s top local meet. The meet begins with a middle school race at 8 a.m., followed by four varsity races.

FOOTBALL

Friday — Arbor View at Centennial, 7 p.m.

Once the fiercest rivalry in the Northwest, this game appears to have some teeth again as both teams are ranked in the top 10.

Friday —Foothill at Canyon Springs, 7 p.m.

Canyon Springs is one of the favorites in the Northeast League, but will need a strong performance to top the Falcons in this nonleague game.

Friday —Durango at Las Vegas, 7 p.m.

Durango is coming off a bye and will try to bounce back after losing its first two games by a combined seven points.

Friday —Bishop Gorman at De La Salle (California), 7 p.m.

The Gaels continue their brutal nonleague schedule as they travel to California to face the nation’s 10th-ranked team.

GIRLS GOLF

Thursday — Southeast League match at Wildhorse, noon

Coronado has been off to a hot start, winning its first two meets in hunt of its fifth consecutive state championship.

BOYS SOCCER

Thursday — Tech at Bishop Gorman, 5:30 p.m.

The Roadrunners reached the 3A state tournament last year, and have started off well, but face their biggest of the year when they meet the defending Sunset Region champions.

Friday — Palo Verde at Western, 3:30 p.m.

Two of the best in their respective classes meet, when the Class 4A Panthers visit the 3A Warriors.

GIRLS SOCCER

Thursday — Coronado at Sierra Vista, 3 p.m.

The Mountain Lions have jumped out to a 6-1 start and face one of Southern Nevada’s best. Getting this early game at home may be a big factor for Sierra Vista.

Friday — Centennial at Green Valley, 4:30 p.m.

An intriguing crosstown game pits the red-hot Bulldogs against the defending Sunrise Region champions, whose record is not indicative of how well the Gators have played.

BOYS TENNIS

Wednesday — Bishop Gorman at Coronado, 3 p.m.

State championship contenders collide when the Gaels head to Henderson for a clash with the Cougars.

GIRLS TENNIS

Thursday — Palo Verde at Faith Lutheran, 3.30 p.m.

The unbeaten Panthers venture to Faith Lutheran for a date with the Crusaders, who won their first seven matches.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Friday-Saturday — Durango Fall Classic

The annual Durango Fall Classic returns to the Las Vegas Valley for the 24th year. Top volleyball teams from across the country will congregate at Durango, Green Valley, Palo Verde and Coronado for tournament play. Championship play is Saturday afternoon.

Coronado girls down Gorman for 5A volleyball region title

The Coronado girls volleyball team swept Bishop Gorman to win the Class 5A Southern Region final Saturday at Palo Verde. Both teams advance to the state tournament.

Arbor View, Desert Pines ready to challenge Liberty, Gorman

Arbor View and Desert Pines are embracing the opportunities they have against Liberty and Bishop Gorman, respectively, in Friday’s Class 5A Southern Region semifinals.

Coronado, Palo Verde celebrate 5A golf, tennis titles

Coronado set a state record with its score of 11-under at the Class 5A girls golf state championship. In tennis, Palo Verde swept the boys and girls 5A championships.
