Looking ahead at the week in high school sports
Here is a look at some of this week’s top high school sports events.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Monday — Bishop Gorman vs. Sierra Canyon (Calif.) at Coronado, 5:30 p.m.
The area’s No. 1 team takes on the Trailblazers, who are ranked No. 24 in the nation by USA Today. It is the final game of the day in the Las Vegas High School Invitational, which features nine games (including two girls games).
Wednesday — Arbor View at Centennial, 6:30 p.m.
This could be a key game in the Northwest League as six teams appear to be in the mix for four playoff spots.
Wednesday — Liberty at Foothill, 6:30 p.m.
The Patriots and Falcons are off to 2-0 start sin the Southeast League. Liberty sophomore Julian Strawther against Foothill senior Marvin Coleman should be one of the season’s top matchups.
Thursday — Desert Oasis at Durango, 6:30 p.m.
The Diamondbacks and Trailblazers are battling with Sierra Vista for the final two playoff spots from the Southwest League. Durango will be looking for a big game from sophomore Anthony Hunter.
Friday — Foothill at Coronado, 6:30 p.m.
Coronado freshman Jaden Hardy will lead the Cougars against the Falcons in this Southeast League game.
Saturday — Bishop Gorman vs. Findlay Prep at South Point Arena, 6 p.m.
The annual matchup between the Gaels and the Pilots is the final game of the Big City Showdown. Liberty plays Durango at 2:30 p.m., with Clark playing Coronado at 4 p.m.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Tuesday — Spring Valley at Desert Oasis, 5 p.m.
The Grizzlies would have a full grasp on first place in the Southwest League with a win here, as they’ve already topped Bishop Gorman on Dec. 12. The Diamondbacks must slow Essence Booker and Kayla Harris to come out victorious at home.
Wednesday — Coronado at Green Valley, 5 p.m.
The Gators lost their first two games of Southeast League play and would like a win over Coronado to announce their playoff intentions. Haley Tyrell is a walking double-double, and she’ll probably give Green Valley fits all game long.
Thursday — Rancho at Canyon Springs, 5 p.m.
Saipress Jones is proving she’s more than just a soccer player for the Rams, and has contributed nicely this season with senior guards Kyndal Ricks and Lea Williams. Do they have enough to down the Pioneers in a key Northeast battle?
Friday — Foothill at Coronado, 5 p.m.
Laurel Rockwood is one of the best freshman in the Valley, and she helped the Falcons top Green Valley last week in convincing fashion. Can Foothill prove it’s the second-best team in the Southeast with a win over Coronado?
Saturday — Big City Showdown, 11:30 a.m.
Four of the top girls basketball teams in Southern Nevada will convene at the South Point Arena for a high-level doubleheader. Desert Oasis takes on Coronado, while Bishop Gorman gets Liberty in the nightcap.
FLAG FOOTBALL
Tuesday — Coronado at Green Valley, 4:30 p.m.
Local powers Coronado and Green Valley meet to battle for supremacy in the Southeast League.
WRESTLING
Friday — Chaparral Invitational at Chaparral, 2:30 p.m.
The top tournament in the city this weekend, the Cowboys host the likes of Foothill, Sierra Vista, SLAM Academy, among others.
Saturday — Dick Comly Invitational at Victor Valley (California), 9 a.m.
Las Vegas, Liberty and Palo Verde head west to take part in a California tournament.
Friday — Spring Creek Tournament at Spring Creek, 3 p.m.
Virgin Valley will get a chance to prove itself before state against the defending Class 3A state champions at their place.
