Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of this week’s top high school sports events.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Tuesday — Coronado at Liberty, 6:30 p.m.

The Cougars are coming off a key Southeast League win over Foothill, and will look to take control of the league in this one. Super sophomore Julian Strawther will key Liberty’s upset plans.

Wednesday — Canyon Springs at Las Vegas, 6:30 p.m.

A battle of unbeatens in the Northeast League. Canyon Springs’ Kevin Legardy and Las Vegas’ Donovan Joyner are among the area’s highest-scoring guards.

Thursday — Coronado at Silverado, 6:30 p.m.

Martell Williams and the Skyhawks will try to upset the Cougars for the second time this season. Silverado beat Coronado 86-84 on Jan. 9.

Thursday — Faith Lutheran at Arbor View, 6:30 p.m.

This could be a key matchup in the Northwest League as teams jockey for playoff position.

Friday — Eldorado at Las Vegas, 6:30 p.m.

Another key matchup in the Northeast League. The Sundevils look for a measure of revenge as the Wildcats have defeated them twice already.

Friday — Bishop Gorman at Coronado, 6:30 p.m.

An interesting nonleague matchup, and another big game for the Cougars. Can freshman Jaden Hardy shoot the Cougars past the top-ranked Gaels?

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Wednesday — Moapa Valley at Chaparral, 5 p.m.

The Cowboys are fighting for one of the Sunrise League’s four playoff spots. A win here over first-place Moapa Valley would all but put them in.

Thursday — Cimarron-Memorial at Legacy, 5 p.m.

The Spartans defeated Legacy 58-41 at home on Dec. 13, and would be in prime position for the second Northwest League playoff spot below Centennial if they win on the road here. Cimarron guards Tasia Moore, Elise Young and Amoura Whitney have been a load to handle this season on the perimeter.

Thursday — Spring Valley at Bishop Gorman, 5 p.m.

Gorman’s Georgia Ohiaeri is one of Southern Nevada’s best players, but the junior forward will need a ton of help to slow down Spring Valley, which is relentless with its full-court pressure on the defensive end.

Friday — Bishop Gorman at Coronado, 5 p.m.

Gorman travels across town in what probably is the week’s best nonleague matchup. Twin sisters Caira and Shaira Young could be the difference on the perimeter, as Coronado rolls out several post players.

FLAG FOOTBALL

Monday — Legacy at Palo Verde, 4:30 p.m.

Legacy (8-7) travels to Palo Verde (9-1) for important Northwest League matchup as both teams look to keep pace with conference leader Arbor View.

Wednesday — Cimarron-Memorial at Arbor View, 4:30 p.m.

The Spartans are coming off a pair of losses, and will look to rebound in another marquee Northwest League showdown.

Wednesday — Foothill at Green Valley, 4:30 p.m.

The Falcons upended the Gators on Jan. 10 to hand them their first loss of the season.

WRESTLING

Friday — Clark Classic at Clark, 3 p.m.

The final weekend of the regular season sees some of the best in Southern Nevada congregate in the Chargers’ gym. Centennial and Foothill are two teams to keep an eye on.

Friday — Class 2A Southern League Duals at Indian Springs, 3 p.m.

A week before they meet in the postseason, Class 2A/1A teams head to Indian Springs for a warm-up. Tonopah won the region title last year.
