Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of this week’s top high school sports events.

CROSS COUNTRY

Saturday — Southern Nevada League Finals at Basic, 9 a.m.

A postseason meet of sorts, with champions crowned in the four Class 4A leagues (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest), along with the Class 3A Sunrise and Sunset and 2A Southern League. The meet begins with 1.4-mile middle school races at 8 a.m., followed by the first 3.1-mile high school race at 9 a.m.

FOOTBALL

Thursday — Virgin Valley at Chaparral, 7 p.m.

Virgin Valley became the Class 3A Sunrise League front runner when it upset Moapa Valley on Friday. But Chaparral could make things interesting if they can slow Jayden Perkins and the Bulldogs.

Friday — Las Vegas at Rancho, 7 p.m.

The annual “Bone Game,” is the state’s longest running rivalry. It’s been a one-sided affair of late, with Las Vegas dominating. But the Wildcats are just 1-6, leaving the Rams hope.

Friday — Foothill at Basic, 7 p.m.

Two of the three 2-1 teams in the Southeast League square off, with the winner moving closer to a home playoff game. Basic dominated last year’s matchup, winning 45-6, but the Falcons have looked like the stronger team this season.

GIRLS GOLF

Monday-Tuesday — Class 4A state tournament at Highland Falls

Coronado will be seeking its fourth consecutive state title. Cougars senior Sami Penor enters fresh off her second Class 4A Sunrise Region title last week at Bear’s Best, while junior teammate Victoria Estrada is the defending individual state champion. Coronado beat second-place Bishop Gorman by 63 strokes last season.

Wednesday-Thursday — Class 3A state tournament at Mountain Falls

Elko won last season’s state tournament by 18 strokes over second-place Boulder City. The Eagles are coming off their second consecutive region title last week at Las Vegas Municipal and will lean on senior Lani Potter, who is the defending individual state champion.

BOYS SOCCER

Monday — Bishop Gorman at Durango, 3 p.m.

The top two teams in the Southwest League meet in a game that would give the winner a leg up on taking the league title. The two teams fought to a 3-3 draw on Sept. 18.

Wednesday — Foothill at Coronado, 3 p.m.

If anyone is going to unseat at the Cougars atop the Southeast League, it could be the Falcons, who have just one league loss despite a 5-8-1 overall record.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tuesday — Green Valley at Coronado, 3 p.m.

The Gators came close to knocking off the Cougars, who are undefeated in Southeast League play, in their last meeting, and will try to improve on their 1-0 defeat on Sept. 28.

Thursday — Palo Verde at Arbor View, 3:30 p.m.

The top-ranked Panthers visit the five-time defending state champions. Palo Verde won the Sept. 25 matchup, 4-2.

TENNIS

Thursday-Saturday — Class 3A and 4A state tournaments at Darling Tennis Center

The team tournaments will be held on Thursday and Friday. The Class 3A and 4A girls finals will be held at 8 a.m. on Friday, followed by the boys team championships at 11 a.m. The individual tournaments begin on Friday with semifinal matches beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Wednesday — Silverado at Foothill, 6 p.m.

The Skyhawks, who feature reigning Gatorade Player of the Year Sydney Berenyi, could lock up a top-two playoff seed in the Sunrise League with a road victory here. Foothill and junior outside hitter Whitley Brow will look to play spoiler, and also make a late-season climb up the Sunrise League standings.

Thursday — Centennial at Durango, 6 p.m.

Durango finishes its season with arguably the most brutal schedule of any Class 4A team. A win against the Bulldogs would be huge, as the Trailblazers finish league play with Bishop Gorman and Shadow Ridge.
