Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of the week’s top high school sports events.

CROSS COUNTRY

Friday — Southern Region Cross Country Championships at Veterans’ Memorial Park, Boulder City, 9 a.m.

All classes will compete in the annual region championships with berths at the state meet on the line. The meet begins with the Class 4A Sunrise Region boys race at 9 a.m. T’he Class 4A boys and girls awards ceremonies will be at 11:10 a.m., followed by the Class 3A and 2A races, which are scheduled to begin at 11:40 a.m.

FOOTBALL

Thursday — Green Valley at Foothill, 7 p.m.

A home playoff game is on the line in this battle of Henderson schools. The winner gets the Southeast League’s No. 2 seed and will host a game in the opening round of the Class 4A Sunrise Region playoffs.

Thursday — Sierra Vista at Bishop Gorman, 7 p.m.

The winner claims the Class 4A Southwest League title as both teams enter with a 5-0 record. It’s the second consecutive season that the league title has come down to this matchup. Gorman won 56-7 last season and hasn’t allowed a point in Southwest play this year.

Thursday —Legacy at Shadow Ridge, 7 p.m.

The Northwest League playoff picture essentially rides on the outcome of this one. If Legacy wins, the Longhorns will be the league’s No. 3 seed with Palo Verde No. 4. If Shadow Ridge wins and Palo Verde beats Centennial, it throws things into chaos with a three-team tie for third place which will come down to point differential to decide.

Thursday — Durango at Spring Valley, 7 p.m.

The Trailblazers have lost two straight heading into this one, and will look to for a measure of revenge after the Grizzlies won 34-31 in two overtimes last season to knock Durango out of the playoffs. The winner will be the Southwest’s No. 3 seed.

BOYS SOCCER

Monday — Sunrise Mountain at Western, 3 p.m.

Not only is this a matchup between the top Class 3A teams, the Warriors could also be the last hope of stopping the Miners’ second perfect regular season in a row. Sunrise Mountain won 3-0 on Sept. 27.

Wednesday — Mojave at Adelson School, 4 p.m.

The last game of the season for both teams could decide who grabs the last spot in the Class 3A Sunset League playoffs. The Rattlers have made the playoffs in each of the last five seasons and the Lions have not reached the postseason since 2011.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tuesday — Durango at Sierra Vista, 3 p.m.

With Clark’s league schedule complete, the Mountain Lions need just one point in two games next week to break a tie with the Chargers for the Southwest League’s final playoff spot. The Mountain Lions play league-champion Bishop Gorman on Thursday, so Tuesday against Durango may be their best shot.

Wednesday — Tech at Moapa Valley, 3:30 p.m.

Tied atop the Class 3A Sunrise League standings entering play this week, the game between the Roadrunners and Pirates could be for the league championship, as Moapa Valley will try to unseat last year’s champion.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Monday — Durango at Bishop Gorman, 6 p.m.

The Gaels could secure the league title with a win in this matchup of undefeated Sunset League teams. Gorman already beat Shadow Ridge earlier this season, a team Durango still must face after this match.

Tuesday — Coronado at Silverado, 6 p.m.

Both teams are undefeated in league play, and the winner will lock up the Sunrise League’s top seed for the playoffs. The Skyhawks defeated the Cougars in the region semifinals last season before winning their first Sunrise Region title since 2008.

Wednesday — Shadow Ridge at Durango, 6 p.m.

If Durango beats Gorman on Monday, the Trailblazers have an opportunity to claim their first league title since 2007 with a win over the Mustangs. Should Durango lose Monday, this match will be a battle for second place.
