Looking ahead at the week in high school sports
Here are some of this week’s top high school sports events.
CROSS COUNTRY
Saturday — UNLV Invitational at Craig Ranch Park, 8:30 a.m.
The event starts at 7:15 a.m. with a pair of collegiate races, with the boys varsity race scheduled for 8:30 a.m. The high school races will be 3.1 miles, and 28 local teams are entered.
FOOTBALL
Saturday — Arbor View at Shadow Ridge, 11 a.m.
Fans of fancy spread offenses need not show up for this one. But if you like good, old-fashioned running games, this is the game for you. Arbor View is ranked No. 3 among Class 4A schools and average 352 rushing yards. The No. 8 Mustangs have been even better, averaging 493 yards on the ground.
Saturday — Clark at Sierra Vista, 11 a.m.
This one is for a share of first place in the Southwest League, as both teams won their league openers in Week 4. Clark is off to a surprising 2-0 start, while Sierra Vista has rebounded after losing to Palo Verde in Week 1.
Saturday — Palo Verde at Faith Lutheran, 1 p.m.
Both teams are in need of a win if they want to make a playoff run in the Northwest League. Palo Verde has lost three straight since knocking off Sierra Vista in Week 1. Faith Lutheran has run into three tough teams, losing to No. 3 Arbor View, No. 5 Green Valley and Valor Christian, one of the top teams in Colorado.
GIRLS GOLF
Tuesday — Southwest League match at Bear’s Best, 12:30 p.m.
Sierra Vista golfers Caroline Valle and Aliyah Williams each had top-five finishes at Spanish Trail last week to help the Mountain Lions place second behind Bishop Gorman. Can the pair help Sierra Vista close that 44-stroke gap here in this seven-team match?
BOYS SOCCER
Monday — Durango at Bishop Gorman, 5:30 p.m.
The teams split the series last year, and they were the the top two teams in the Southwest League last year. A Trailblazers’ win could go a long way in earning the league’s top seed, especially with the Oct. 16 meeting at Durango.
Monday — Cimarron-Memorial at Faith Lutheran, 5:30 p.m.
In a hotly contested Northwest League, one team deserving a playoff berth will be left out. The Spartans and Crusaders want to make sure it’s not them.
GIRLS SOCCER
Wednesday — Desert Oasis at Bishop Gorman, 5:30 p.m.
The Diamondbacks jumped into the coaches poll this week, and will look to build on their Southwest League lead against the defending league champions.
Monday — Silverado at Coronado, 3 p.m.
The No. 4 Cougars open Southeast League play against the Skyhawks. Coronado has won its league the last four seasons and the Skyhawks will try to upset one of the Sunrise Region’s best.
BOYS TENNIS
Monday — Foothill at Green Valley, 3 p.m.
The Falcons and Gators put undefeated league marks on the line in this matchup. Foothill is 5-0 in league, and takes on the Gators, who are off to a 7-0 start.
GIRLS TENNIS
Tuesday — Spring Valley at Bonanza, 3 p.m.
The Grizzlies are hoping to make the playoffs, but will need to make a late run to secure a spot. Spring Valley currently is tied for eighth at 5-5 in the Sunset League. Bonanza is 6-3 and currently sits in fifth place.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Tuesday — Palo Verde at Shadow Ridge, 6 p.m.
Both Sunset Region powers enter fresh off the Durango Fall Classic, and will look to move into a first-place tie with a win here. Aaliah Largusa and Carli Tanner will lead the Panthers’ offense against the experienced Mustangs, who are one of the favorites to make the state tournament.
