Maddux headlines 23rd NIAA Hall of Fame class

Major League Baseball inducted Greg Maddux into its Hall of Fame in 2014.

In February, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association will do likewise.

The former Valley High standout heads an eight-person class announced Friday by the NIAA.

The group will be inducted on Feb. 26 at the Orleans Arena.

Maddux helped the Vikings to a pair of state titles before embarking on a professional career that saw him post a 355-227 record and 3.16 ERA at the big-league level.

Former Basic wrestler Jimmy May, who also had an outstanding coaching career at Eldorado, was the other athlete in the class.

May won two Class 3A state individual titles at Basic, and posted a 318-20-2 record in dual meets as a coach, leading the Sundevils to 10 state titles.

Coaches Tim Dailey, Bob Kelly and Al LaRocque also were in the class.

Dailey served as head wrestling, cross country, baseball and track coach at Indian Springs, and also was the school’s athletic director. The Thunderbirds won two state cross country titles and four track titles under Dailey, and he also produced 11 state championship wrestlers.

Kelly led Clark’s girls volleyball team to five state titles before moving on to Durango, where he captured three state crowns.

He also led the Trailblazers to the state title in first season of NIAA boys volleyball in 2000. He finished with a 701-279 career record in girls volleyball and a 204-72 mark in boys volleyball.

LaRocque was boys basketball coach at Western and Durango. He compiled a 380-227 record, winning two state titles.

Administrators J.D. Fraser and Bill Garis and official Bill Evans rounded out the class.
