NOTES: Holiday tourneys to begin

The holiday tournament season kicks off today with the start of the Bishop Gorman Holiday Classic.
The 18-team tournament begins with two games today. Dominguez (Calif.) plays Spring Valley at 5:30 p.m., and Buchanan (Calif.) takes on Foothill at 7.
The tournament continues through Saturday, with the championship game scheduled for 6 p.m.
The field includes five local teams: Gorman, Foothill, Spring Valley, Faith Lutheran and Desert Pines.
The tournament field has several top teams, including McClymonds (Calif.), which went 32-0 last season and currently is ranked 21st in the nation by USA Today.
McClymonds was the California Division 1 state champion last season.
Two girls tournaments begin Thursday. The 12-team Vegas Invitational at Mountain View runs through Saturday. The four-team Rock Holiday Classic at Henderson International ends Friday.
Two more tournaments begin Saturday: the Sierra Vista Invitational, which features eight boys teams and eight girls teams, and the 16-team Lady Wolves Holiday Tournament at Basic. Both tournaments run through Tuesday.
HOLMES HONORED — WNBA player Sequoia Holmes had her jersey retired Tuesday night at Mojave, where she starred before going on to a standout career at UNLV.
Holmes was a rookie this past season with the Houston Comets. When the franchise disbanded, she was selected in the dispersal draft by the Phoenix Mercury.
