Tech’s appeal to move to Class 3A denied by NIAA Board
It appears, for now, the realignment drama is over.
The last attempted change was by Tech, which unsuccessfully petitioned to move back down to Class 3A at the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s Board of Control meeting on Wednesday in Reno.
Tech, which competed last season in 3A, was one of the schools which sent a principal to the board in January with a realignment proposal. That proposal included Tech moving up to 4A.
But after Valley, which did not have its principal attend the meeting and remained in 4A, successfully appealed to move down to 3A at the spring board meeting, Tech attempted to d the same.
The board declined its proposal, seemingly solidifying the classifications for the next realignment cycle. That cycle will run for two years, beginning in the 2018-19 school year.
Other items of note
— For football and flag football, the Class 3A Southern Region will send six teams to the postseason instead of eight. The two league winners will receive a bye, with the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds will be cross-bracketed.
— Under the new six-team state tournament for 4A, there will always be a South-vs.-South quarterfinal game under the new rules. That game will be played in Southern Nevada, regardless of which part of the state hosts the tournament. The exception is baseball, where pitch-count rules would create a disadvantage. An alternative has not been determined.
