1A STATE: Higbee’s heroics lead Panthers to title round

Tyler Higbee pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Pahranagat Valley’s baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Round Mountain in the winners’ bracket final of the Class 1A state tournament Friday at Bishop Manogue in Reno.

Pahranagat Valley (15-9) advanced to meet Virginia City (17-12-1) in the Class 1A state title round at noon Saturday at UNR’s Peccole Park.

Pahranagat Valley's No. 9 hitter, Jeremy Minick, led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right field, went to second base on a passed ball and reached third on Jeffery Jones’ groundout.

Higbee then singled through the left side to score Minick with the winning run.

Derek Hansen doubled for Pahranagat Valley.

Serjio Chavez pitched a complete game for Round Mountain, scattering six hits.

Virginia City 11, Round Mountain 6 — The Muckers scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to overcome an early 6-2 deficit and oust the Knights (14-12).

Emitt Davis hit a three-run double off the scoreboard in the top of the second that put Round Mountain up 6-2.

Davis finished 2-for-4 for the Knights.
