3A STATE: Wolverines claw Pirates in first round

Andy McKechnie smacked three doubles as part of a 16-hit attack as Truckee overwhelmed Moapa Valley 13-5 in the opening round of the Class 3A state baseball tournament Thursday at Damonte Ranch in Reno.

Tony Buranzon and Luke Theis each added a double for Truckee (27-5), and winning pitcher Steven Baker hit a triple.

Baker tossed a five-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Jake Repp, Dylan Mortensen and Jared Repp each had a double for Moapa Valley (10-20), which will play Elko (21-9) in an elimination game at UNR's Peccole Park at 8 a.m. Friday.

Churchill County 1, Elko 0 — At Damonte Ranch, the Greenwave (17-16) edged the Indians.

Churchill County will play Truckee at 10:15 a.m. Friday at UNR.
