All 16 Class 4A playoff berths determined
There’s not much drama left in the baseball playoff picture.
With one day of league play remaining in the Class 4A leagues, all 16 playoff berths have been determined.
The Southwest and Northeast Leagues still have a little jockeying for position to be done, but that’s it. The Northwest and Southeast Leagues wrapped up play Wednesday.
Here’s an unofficial look at where teams probably will slot in. The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association is expected to finalize playoff pairings later this week.
In the Sunset Region, Cimarron-Memorial (12-2) earned the top seed in the Northwest League, winning the league by two games over Palo Verde and Centennial (both 10-4).
Palo Verde, which swept Centennial, earned the No. 2 seed with the Bulldogs taking the No. 3 seed.
Legacy (9-5) grabbed the No. 4 seed as it knocked off Palo Verde and got the help it needed when Centennial beat Arbor View.
Some work still needs to be done in the Southwest League, where Bishop Gorman (15-0) wrapped up the league title last week.
Sierra Vista and Spring Valley (both 11-4) are tied for second, one-half game ahead of Durango (11-5).
Spring Valley would lock up the No. 2 seed with a win at Pahrump Valley on Thursday. Spring Valley swept Sierra Vista in league play.
Sierra Vista would grab the No. 2 seed with a Spring Valley loss as the Mountain Lions would either beat Bonanza or, even if they lost, would win a three-way tie at 11-5 on run differential in head-to-head games.
If Spring Valley loses, Durango would move into the No. 3 seed and Spring Valley would be the No. 4.
In the Sunrise Region, Green Valley (13-1) is the Southeast League champion.
Foothill (11-3) locked up the No. 2 seed Wednesday. Coronado (10-4) is the No. 3 seed, followed by Silverado (9-5).
Las Vegas (12-0) won the Northeast League title, with Rancho (9-2) having locked up the No. 2 seed.
Eldorado and Valley (both 6-5) are in. If Valley beats Chaparral on Thursday, Valley earns the No. 3 seed by virtue of winning the second meeting with Eldorado. If Valley loses to Chaparral, Eldorado gets the No. 3 seed on beaten opponents’ points.
Nothing will change in the small-school picture until Friday’s games.
In Class 3A, Virgin Valley (8-2) has locked up the top seed and will host Boulder City (2-8) in the region tournament.
Faith Lutheran (6-4) needs one win over Moapa Valley (4-6) in their doubleheader in Overton on Friday to secure the No. 2 seed. If Moapa sweeps on Friday, Faith Lutheran heads right back to Overton next weekend for the region tournament. Otherwise, the Pirates visit Faith Lutheran.
In Class 2A, Needles (11-1) needs only a split with White Pine (8-4) to lock up the No. 1 seed.
The Meadows (9-3) needs one win to get the No. 2 seed but could still move up with a sweep at Calvary Chapel and two Needles losses.
West Wendover (7-5) will pick up two more wins Friday when Agassi Prep forfeits two games to the Wolverines. Lincoln County (7-5) will stay in the discussion as long as it wins at least once at Mountain View.
In the Class 1A Southern League, Pahranagat Valley (5-1) will lock up the top spot with a sweep of Sandy Valley. Lake Mead (6-1) could tie the Panthers for first if it beats Trinity, but Pahranagat Valley, which won the second meeting against Lake Mead, would get the nod.
In the Class 1A Central League, Indian Springs (5-1) needs only a split against Spring Mountain to lock up the No. 1 seed. Tonopah (4-2) needs one win against Round Mountain to earn the league’s other playoff spot and knock out Beatty (5-3).
