ALL-STARS: Gorman, Cimarron stars propel Sunset

Bishop Gorman and Cimarron-Memorial were the top baseball teams in Southern Nevada most of the season, eventually meeting in the Class 4A state final.

So it was no surprise Friday night when the Gaels and Spartans dominated the Southern Nevada Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game.

A combined 12 players from the two teams sparked the Sunset Region seniors to a 21-6 rout of their Sunrise counterparts in nine innings at College of Southern Nevada’s Morse Stadium.

Cimarron infielder/pitcher Taylor Doyle belted a three-run homer, drew a walk and was hit by a pitch on the way to winning the Sunset Most Valuable Player award.

Sunrise MVP honors were won by Silverado outfielder/pitcher Braden Keathley, who went 1-for-2 with an RBI triple, two walks and two runs scored.

Gorman’s Joey Rickard led off the game with a home run to left field, and the Sunset never trailed.

Doyle’s three-run homer highlighted a fourth inning in which the Sunset sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 times to take a 16-0 lead.

Cimarron’s Kris Kaplan was 2-for-2 with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs for the Sunset, and Spartans teammates Kody Gorden and Brad Oswald had two hits each.

Gorman’s R.J. Santigate went 2-for-2 with three RBIs for the Sunset, which outhit the Sunrise 20-8. Legacy’s Chase Skinner clubbed a solo homer and scored twice.

Sunset starter Stephen Manthei of Gorman struck out the side in the only inning he pitched to get the win.

Foothill’s Jordan Mathis had a solo home run for the Sunrise.

Before the game, Las Vegas Baseball Academy founder Mike Martin and former Rancho coach and athletic director Tom Coleman were inducted into the SNBCA Hall of Fame.
